What is agentic commerce optimization?
Agentic commerce optimization is the work of making your products or services findable, comparable, and purchasable by AI shopping agents such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. In practice that means a structured product feed, crawlable prices and availability, and a checkout or booking path an agent can finish. In 2026 the single biggest lever is the feed: after OpenAI's July 10 model update, roughly two-thirds of ChatGPT Shopping recommendations come from merchant feeds rather than crawled pages, according to Profound's September 2026 analysis.
TL;DR
- AI shopping agents find products three ways: your feed, your crawled pages, or a platform catalog. Feeds win in 2026.
- AI-referred visitors to U.S. retail sites convert 60% better and spend 53% more per visit than other traffic (Adobe, July 2026).
- ChatGPT: allow OAI-SearchBot, meet the nine-field feed spec, and get in through Shopify, Etsy, or the merchant program.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini: Merchant Center plus the Universal Commerce Protocol. Copilot: Shopify, PayPal, or Stripe.
- Service businesses get found through bookings, not carts: Reserve with Google, a complete Business Profile, and a phone someone answers.
What Is Agentic Commerce Optimization?
Agentic commerce is a purchase or booking an AI agent completes for someone. The person says what they want; the agent finds it, compares it, and either checks out or hands back an order that is one tap from done. Agentic commerce optimization is everything a merchant does so the agent can find you, trust your data, and finish the transaction. It sits between SEO and feed management, and it borrows from both.
This guide is the how-to. If you want the protocol explainer, including how the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Google's AP2 work and what actually happened to Instant Checkout, read our agentic commerce guide. Here we assume you have decided to show up and want the sequence of steps, surface by surface, for both product stores and service businesses.
One framing before the steps. An agent is a literal shopper. It cannot be won over by a hero image or a brand story. It reads a price, a stock status, a shipping estimate, a return window, a rating, and it either finds those facts in a form it can parse or it moves on. Most of what follows is about putting those facts where agents look.
How Do AI Shopping Agents Find Products?
Three retrieval paths exist, and their relative weight changed sharply this summer:
- A product feed you submit to the platform. OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft each accept structured feeds, and each one now prefers them.
- Product pages the platform's crawler reads. OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, Googlebot for AI Mode. This is the path most independent stores have been relying on by default.
- A platform catalog that syndicates for you. Shopify Catalog and Google Merchant Center push your listings into several agents at once.
The data on which path wins is unusually clear. Profound tracked 1.75 million ChatGPT Shopping prompts across 687 of its customers and published the results on September 3, 2026. On July 9, 8.26% of recommended products were classified as feed-integrated. On July 10, the day after OpenAI released GPT-5.6, that share was 61.54%. By early September it sat near 65%.
Two side effects matter for a small merchant. First, concentration: references to the top 10 stores rose from 22.5% to 41.8% of the total, and the number of unique merchants ChatGPT referenced fell from 13,524 to 10,607. Second, the shift was abrupt. Of the 687 tracked merchants, 450 lost at least a third of their Shopping visibility between the July 7-9 and July 10-12 windows; 67 gained by the same margin. Shopify's integration alone accounted for roughly 35% of feed-integrated retrieval.
A methodology note, because it matters: those are prompts a monitoring vendor ran, not sessions from real shoppers. They describe what ChatGPT returns to a tracking system, not what buyers saw or bought. The direction is still unmistakable. If your store has been relying on crawled product pages alone, your ChatGPT visibility most likely dropped in July, and a feed is how you get it back.
Why Is AI Shopping Agent Traffic Worth the Effort?
Because the visitors it sends behave better than almost any other channel. Adobe Analytics, drawing on more than one trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, reported in August 2026 that AI-referral traffic grew 62% year over year in July and is up 1,219% since October 2024. More important than volume is what those visitors do once they land.
July was the eleventh straight month in which AI-referred visits converted better than non-AI visits. That is a reversal: Adobe's Q1 2026 report, published in April, showed AI-referred traffic converting 38% worse than other sources in March 2025 and 42% better by March 2026. The people arriving from an agent have already narrowed their choice inside the conversation. Your product page is the confirmation step, not the persuasion step, which is why feed accuracy and page clarity matter more than a redesign.
Adobe also scored how much of a retailer's site content a large language model can actually read. Even the best category, apparel, was only 76% readable in July 2026; grocery sat at 59%. In Adobe's words: "When an LLM cannot easily read brand content (such as amenities, pricing or availability), potential revenue is being left on the table." The gap is the opportunity. Most of your competitors have not closed it either.
Which AI Shopping Surfaces Matter in 2026?
Four, and they have different doors. The table below is the map we use when scoping this work for a store. Every row ends in a path that a business without a development team can take.
| Surface | How products get in | Where checkout happens | Small-business path |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI product feed (approved merchants) or Shopify / Etsy catalog; OAI-SearchBot crawl as fallback | Your site in an in-app browser, or a merchant-built ChatGPT app | Shopify Agentic Storefronts, Etsy, or apply at chatgpt.com/merchants |
| Google AI Mode & Gemini | Google Merchant Center feed; Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for checkout | On Google's surfaces via Google Pay or PayPal; you stay merchant of record | Merchant Center plus Shopify, or a UCP-enabled platform |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify catalog (auto-enrolled after an opt-out window), or apply via PayPal or Stripe | Inside Copilot (Copilot Checkout, launched January 8, 2026) | Shopify, or Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite |
| Everything else (Meta, Perplexity) | Platform catalogs; Shopify lists Meta as coming and Perplexity in its Winter '26 launch | Varies by channel and opt-in | Shopify Catalog (including the Agentic plan for non-Shopify brands) |
Notice what every row has in common: a feed, and a platform that carries it. The crawler path still exists, but no major agent treats it as the primary source anymore. The timeline below shows how quickly that consensus formed.
How Do You Optimize for ChatGPT Shopping?
In six steps, in this order. The first three get you into the index; the last three decide whether you win the comparison once you are in it.
Step 1: Let OAI-SearchBot in
ChatGPT's search and shopping features use a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. If your robots.txt blocks it, your products will not appear in shopping results, regardless of quality. OpenAI documents it separately from GPTBot, the training crawler, so you can allow one and disallow the other. Check your CDN too: bot-management rules often block by category rather than by name. Our AI crawler management guide walks through the user-agent list, and should you block AI agents covers the policy decision, including the Cloudflare default changes scheduled for September 15, 2026.
Step 2: Build a feed that meets OpenAI's product feed spec
OpenAI's feed spec has nine required fields: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability, and price. Recommended fields that directly affect ranking include sale_price, gtin, mpn, condition, product_category, color, size, review_count, star_rating, and accepts_returns.
Formats accepted are JSONL, CSV, or TSV, plus gzip variants, and OpenAI also accepts a Google-compatible feed, which means an existing Merchant Center feed is most of the way there. Three flags control what happens with each item: is_eligible_search (defaults to true), is_eligible_checkout, and is_ads_eligible. The spec's onboarding guide describes uploading the full feed once a day and pushing price and stock changes through the API during the day. One rule OpenAI states outright: never reuse an item_id for a different item.
Step 3: Get through the door
Shopify and Etsy sellers are carried in by their platforms; Shopify VP Mani Fazeli said on March 24, 2026 that "millions of Shopify merchants are open for business in ChatGPT." Everyone else applies at chatgpt.com/merchants, and OpenAI describes the program as "currently available to approved partners." Apply with the feed already built and validated. An application that points to a live, spec-compliant feed is a different conversation from one that promises to build it later.
Step 4: Decide what "checkout" means for you
The original Instant Checkout, where ChatGPT completed purchases inline, was retired in March 2026. OpenAI said the first version "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and that it is now "allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery." Large retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Sephora built ChatGPT apps. For a small store, Shopify's help center describes the practical reality: ChatGPT users complete the purchase on your store, in an in-app browser or a new tab.
So your checkout has to work inside a webview with no saved cookies and a shopper who is one hesitation from leaving. Guest checkout, an address form that autofills, a shipping cost visible before the last step. We documented what breaks in these sessions in AI browsers are visiting your site; the fixes are the same.
Step 5: Win the comparison with reviews, titles, and price
Once you are in the feed, ChatGPT still has to pick you over the other feed offers. Profound's June 24, 2026 breakdown of roughly one million ChatGPT Shopping offers found that feed-sourced offers appeared as the first product offer about 99.9% of the time, and that among page-sourced offers the differentiators were customer reviews, descriptive product titles, and competitive pricing. Feed your review_count and star_rating. Write titles that say what the product is for, not just what it is called. Know where your price sits against the same GTIN elsewhere, because the agent does.
Step 6: Reuse the feed for ChatGPT ads
The is_ads_eligible flag in the same feed controls whether an item can appear in OpenAI's ads products. You do not need a second data pipeline for paid placement. Build one feed, keep it accurate, and toggle eligibility per item.
What this looks like on a real store
A pattern we see repeatedly when auditing independent stores: the product page shows a sale price, the JSON-LD says the regular price, and there is no feed at all. A human shopper never notices. An agent sees two prices and no authoritative source, and it recommends the store whose numbers agree with themselves.
The fix is rarely a rebuild. It is one feed generated from the same inventory table that renders the page, and a schema block that reads from that table too. When the three sources cannot disagree, the store becomes eligible everywhere at once.
How Do You Get Found in Google AI Mode and Gemini?
Through Google Merchant Center, which is the feed, and the Universal Commerce Protocol, which is the checkout. Google announced UCP on January 11, 2026 as an open standard co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart and endorsed by Adyen, American Express, Best Buy, Mastercard, Stripe, The Home Depot, Visa, and others. It powers a checkout on eligible product listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app, paid through Google Pay or PayPal, with the retailer staying merchant of record.
At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google added a Universal Cart that works across retailers and across Search and Gemini, embedded Affirm and Klarna in Google Pay, and gave Merchant Center three new tools: AI performance insights for tracking your visibility against competitors, "conversational attributes" that let you rewrite product descriptions for how people ask in conversation, and an Ask Advisor assistant. Checkout was live with Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and Shopify merchants including Fenty and Steve Madden, with Canada, Australia, and the U.K. next.
For eligibility, Google's Merchant Center help is specific. UCP-powered checkout applies to products eligible in the United States, Canada, and Australia and is "available for select merchants at this time." Only listings using the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) product attribute display the Buy button, and you need a Google Pay & Wallet Console account. Google's own instruction for everyone else is to make sure "all your data in the Merchant Center, from product feeds to brand assets, is as robust and up-to-date as possible," because discovery in AI Mode runs on the same feed whether or not you have checkout.
- Claim and clean Merchant Center. Resolve every disapproval; an item that fails Shopping policy is invisible to AI Mode too.
- Fill the conversational attributes. Describe the product the way a customer would ask for it: use case, who it is for, what problem it solves.
- On Shopify, turn on the Google channel under Sales channels > Agentic and let Shopify handle UCP.
- Match your on-page
Productschema to the feed. Same price, same availability, same identifiers. Our Google AI Mode guide covers the local side of the same surface.
Agentic Checkout for Small Business: Shopify, Stripe, or Direct?
Pick the path that matches your platform. There is no prize for building the integration yourself, and in 2026 every mainstream platform has a managed route.
Shopify: toggle it on
Shopify Agentic Storefronts, announced with the Winter '26 Edition and made broadly available on March 24, 2026, syndicate your catalog to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta. Per Shopify's help center, discovery is "active by default for eligible stores," direct checkout is a per-channel opt-in managed under Sales channels > Agentic, and you agree to the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms once. Shopify says there are "no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates." Given that Shopify's integration alone carried roughly 35% of ChatGPT's feed-integrated retrieval in Profound's data, this is the highest-return ten minutes a Shopify merchant can spend. If you are choosing a platform now, our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison weighs this among other factors.
Not on Shopify: the Agentic plan or Stripe
Shopify's Agentic plan, launched the same day, lets brands that sell elsewhere add products to Shopify Catalog with no monthly subscription fee and no migration. The other managed route is Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite, announced December 11, 2025, which Stripe describes as "a low-code solution for businesses, letting them sell across AI agents with a single integration." Squarespace, Wix, Etsy, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and commercetools were named as platforms adopting it. WooCommerce specifically committed to day-one support: connect the catalog once and Stripe handles discovery, checkout, Shared Payment Tokens, and Radar fraud rules tuned for non-human traffic.
Microsoft Copilot: mostly automatic
Copilot Checkout launched January 8, 2026 with PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe as launch partners and brands such as Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Ashley Furniture live at launch. Shopify merchants are enrolled automatically after an opt-out window; merchants on PayPal or Stripe apply through those providers. Copilot is smaller than ChatGPT, but the incremental cost of being present is close to zero if you have already done the Shopify or Stripe work. Our Bing Copilot optimization guide covers the organic side.
Direct implementation: only if orders justify it
Implementing the Agentic Commerce Protocol or UCP yourself means checkout endpoints, Shared Payment Token handling, order lifecycle webhooks, and agent-specific fraud rules. It is real engineering, and the merchants doing it are the ones named in the launch posts. Until you can point at agent-originated orders you are losing, take the managed route.
A note on expectations
Profound's data shows the July shift concentrated ChatGPT recommendations among fewer, larger merchants. A feed gets you eligible; it does not get you preferred. Expect the early wins in long-tail and specialty queries where the top ten stores do not carry the item, and treat head-term visibility as a longer project built on reviews, price position, and brand entity strength.
How Do Service Businesses Get Found by AI Agents?
Through bookings rather than carts, and the biggest surface is Google. AI Mode passed one billion monthly users in its first year, according to Google's I/O announcement on May 19, 2026, and its agentic booking already handles restaurant reservations in the U.S. (no Labs opt-in), plus event tickets and beauty or wellness appointments for Labs users, through partners Google names as OpenTable, Resy, Tock, Ticketmaster, StubHub, SeatGeek, Vivid Seats, Booksy, Fresha, and Vagaro.
At I/O Google announced two expansions rolling out to U.S. users in summer 2026. Agentic booking extends to local experiences and services. And AI Mode gains agentic calling: it will phone businesses on the user's behalf in select categories, named as home repair, beauty, and pet care. The next day Google said UCP itself is expanding beyond retail to hotel booking and local food delivery, launching in AI Mode and Google Maps.
Most of the businesses we build for are contractors, clinics, and salons, and the readiness checklist for them is short:
- Connect a Reserve with Google scheduling partner. That is how Google reads live availability. If your booking tool is not on the partner list, the agent cannot see your calendar.
- Complete your Business Profile: categories, services, hours, attributes. The agent filters on these before it ever reaches your site. Our Google Business Profile guide covers each field.
- Publish prices as text on service pages, with
ServiceandOfferschema that match. See schema markup for local businesses. - Answer the phone during posted hours. Agentic calling only helps a business that picks up. If you cannot staff it, an AI phone answering setup that can quote and book is the fallback.
- Keep the calendar honest. A slot that shows open but is not will cost you the booking and, over time, the recommendation.
Keep the Feed, the Schema, and the Page Telling the Same Story
Every surface above consumes the same underlying facts. The feed says one price; the Product JSON-LD says a price; the rendered page shows a price. When those agree, you are eligible everywhere with one set of data. When they disagree, an agent has no way to know which is true, and the safe move for the agent is to prefer the competitor whose numbers match.
The practical rule: generate all three from the same inventory record. Price, currency, availability, SKU or GTIN, shipping cost, and return window should have exactly one source, and the feed, the schema, and the template should read from it rather than restate it. Stock status deserves special attention, because InStock on a sold-out item fails the agent's task and gets remembered. Our product page optimization guide covers the on-page half, and entity SEO covers why a consistent brand identity across Merchant Center, Shopify, and your site compounds over time.
A 30-Day Agentic Commerce Optimization Plan
| Week | Product stores | Service businesses |
|---|---|---|
| 1: Access | Allow OAI-SearchBot; check CDN bot rules; confirm Merchant Center has no disapprovals; export current product data | Confirm your scheduler is a Reserve with Google partner; audit Business Profile categories, services, hours |
| 2: Feed | Shopify: enable Agentic channels. Others: build the nine-field feed, validate, apply at chatgpt.com/merchants or through Stripe | Connect booking partner; publish service prices in text; add Service and Offer schema |
| 3: Data quality | Reconcile feed, schema, and page; add review_count and star_rating; rewrite top-50 titles around use cases; fill conversational attributes | Set up phone coverage or AI answering for posted hours; verify calendar accuracy daily for a week |
| 4: Checkout & measurement | Test checkout in an in-app browser with no cookies; enable guest checkout; tag AI referrers in analytics; baseline Merchant Center AI insights | Book yourself through AI Mode; log where it fails; add booking-source tracking to intake |
How Do You Measure Whether It Is Working?
Start with referrers. Sessions from chatgpt.com, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, and perplexity.ai are identifiable in GA4 and most analytics tools; segment them and compare conversion rate and revenue per session against your site average. Adobe's July 2026 figures, 60% higher conversion and 53% more revenue per visit than non-AI traffic, are a reasonable benchmark for what a healthy AI segment looks like.
Google AI Mode is harder, because its clicks arrive as Google organic in most setups. Use Merchant Center's AI performance insights, introduced in May 2026, for that surface. On Shopify, the Agentic channel reports orders by AI channel directly. And watch server logs: OAI-SearchBot requests against product URLs are the earliest signal that ChatGPT is indexing you, and a sudden drop usually means a robots or CDN change, not a demand change.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is a purchase or booking that an AI agent completes on a person's behalf. The shopper describes what they want inside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot; the agent finds matching products or appointments, compares them, and either checks out directly or hands the person a ready-to-confirm order. Agentic commerce optimization is the merchant-side work of making your products and services findable, comparable, and purchasable through those agents.
How do AI shopping agents find products?
Three ways: a product feed you submit to the platform, product pages the platform's crawler reads, and a platform catalog such as Shopify Catalog or Google Merchant Center that syndicates your listings for you. Feeds now dominate in ChatGPT. Profound's September 3, 2026 analysis of 1.75 million Shopping prompts found feed-integrated products jumped from 8.26% to 61.54% of recommendations on July 10, 2026 and sat near 65% by early September.
How do I optimize for ChatGPT shopping?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, publish a product feed that meets OpenAI's feed spec (nine required fields: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability, price), and get into the merchant program. Shopify and Etsy sellers are included through their platforms; everyone else applies at chatgpt.com/merchants. Then make sure the product page ChatGPT sends shoppers to loads and checks out cleanly inside an in-app browser, with reviews, clear titles, and a competitive price.
Does ChatGPT Instant Checkout still exist?
Not in its original form. In March 2026 OpenAI said the first version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and shifted to letting merchants run their own checkout, either on their site or inside a merchant-built ChatGPT app, while ChatGPT focuses on product discovery. For most stores that means ChatGPT recommends the product and the shopper completes the order on your site in an in-app browser.
Can a service business show up in AI shopping agents?
Yes, through bookings rather than carts. Google's AI Mode already books restaurants, event tickets, and beauty or wellness appointments through Reserve with Google partners such as Booksy, Fresha, and Vagaro, and at I/O on May 19, 2026 Google announced expansion to local services plus agentic calling for home repair, beauty, and pet care businesses in the U.S. during summer 2026. To be eligible you need a Reserve with Google scheduling partner, a complete Google Business Profile, and prices and availability that are accurate in real time.
Do I need Shopify to sell through AI agents?
No, but it is the shortest path. Shopify Agentic Storefronts syndicate your catalog to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta from one admin screen, and Shopify's Agentic plan lets non-Shopify brands list in Shopify Catalog with no monthly subscription fee. WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, and Squarespace stores can go through Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite. Custom builds can submit a feed to OpenAI directly and use Google Merchant Center for AI Mode.
