What Is a Google AI Overview?

A Google AI Overview is an AI-generated summary that appears at the top of Google Search results for certain queries, above all traditional organic listings and ads. It synthesizes information from multiple web pages and presents a direct answer — sometimes with source citations, sometimes without.

Plain-English Definition

When you search something like “how to fix a leaking faucet” or “what is the best CMS for a small business,” Google now often displays a blue-shaded AI summary at the very top of the results page. This is the AI Overview. It uses Google's Gemini AI to read indexed pages and generate a synthesized answer tailored to the query.

Google AI Overviews (previously called Search Generative Experience or SGE) launched broadly in the US in 2024. They appear most frequently for informational and how-to queries. Transactional queries — like “hire a plumber Sacramento” — are less likely to trigger an AI Overview.

Why It Matters

AI Overviews appear above position one. For informational content, that means even the top-ranked page gets pushed below the fold. Clicks to the source pages cited in an Overview can be higher-quality leads — the person has already read a summary and clicked through for depth. But pages not cited in the Overview receive less scroll-to visibility than before.

For service businesses, the implication is clear: informational blog content should be structured and authoritative enough to be cited, while local intent pages (service pages, location pages) are less affected since those queries rarely generate AI Overviews.

How to Get Cited

The clearest path to citation in an AI Overview is to have a page that is already ranking well for the query, structured with clear headers and definitions, and written in direct answer-first language. Schema markup — especially FAQ, HowTo, and Article schema — signals to Google what content is authoritative and structured. Strong E-E-A-T signals and a clean technical setup also contribute.
