GEO is the practice of optimizing content so it appears in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity AI. Where traditional SEO targets blue-link rankings, GEO targets the AI summaries that increasingly appear at the top of search — and inside AI chat tools — before any links.

AI search tools do not rank pages the same way Google's traditional algorithm does. Instead, they retrieve information from multiple sources, synthesize it, and generate a natural-language answer — sometimes citing the sources, sometimes not.
