What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO is the process of optimizing your online presence so your business ranks in searches tied to a specific geographic area — like “HVAC repair Sacramento” or “dentist near me.” It combines your website, your Google Business Profile, and citations across the web.

Plain-English Definition

Local SEO is a branch of search optimization focused on geographic relevance. When someone searches for a service “near me” or in a specific city, Google shows a map pack (three local listings) above the organic results. Local SEO is how you get into that map pack and into the organic results below it.

The three core inputs Google uses for local ranking are relevance (does your business match the query), distance (how close are you to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed is your business online).

Why It Matters

For any business that serves customers in a defined area — a plumber, a law firm, a restaurant, a contractor — local SEO is the highest-leverage marketing channel available. People searching “electrician Roseville CA” are ready to hire. Ranking in those results puts you in front of buyers at the exact moment they're looking.

Without local SEO, you rely on word of mouth and paid ads. Both work, but neither compounds the way organic rankings do. A well-optimized local presence keeps generating leads long after the initial work is done.

They also get listed in local directories with consistent name, address, and phone number.
