What Is Google Business Profile (GBP)?

Google Business Profile is a free listing that controls how your business appears in Google Search and Google Maps. It displays your name, address, phone number, hours, photos, and customer reviews — and is the primary driver of whether you show up in the local map pack.

Plain-English Definition

When you search for a local business on Google, you often see a panel on the right side of the results (or a prominent card on mobile) showing the business name, hours, address, phone number, and reviews. That panel is powered by Google Business Profile, formerly called Google My Business.

Any business owner can claim their listing for free at business.google.com and fill it out with accurate information. A complete, verified profile is the single most important factor in whether your business appears in the local map pack.

Why It Matters

The map pack appears above organic results for most local searches. If your business isn't in those three slots, you are invisible to a large portion of local buyers — even if your website ranks well. Google determines which businesses appear in the map pack based heavily on your GBP completeness, review quantity and quality, and proximity to the searcher.

Beyond rankings, a well-maintained GBP builds trust before a potential customer even visits your website. Photos of real work, consistent positive reviews, and accurate hours reduce friction and increase the likelihood someone calls.

Key Elements to Optimize

The most impactful GBP optimizations are: verifying your listing, choosing the most accurate primary category, writing a detailed business description, uploading high-quality photos regularly, and actively collecting and responding to reviews. Businesses that post weekly updates and maintain photo freshness consistently outrank inactive profiles in the same category and location.
