TL;DR
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization beyond SEO best practices. So AI SEO is mostly SEO done well, plus three extras: letting AI search crawlers in, tracking a fixed list of prompts, and reporting AI referral traffic. Be wary of anyone selling a separate "ChatGPT ranking" package or guaranteeing citations.
Want AI answers to name and link your business? Verlua's AI SEO is built for more customers from Google and AI search: $2,500/mo in launch months, then $1,500/mo. No minimum contract.
How Much Does AI SEO Cost per Month?
Verlua charges $2,500/mo a month during launch months and $1,500/mo a month after that, and AI search work is included in both. Launch months cover the heavy setup: crawler access, indexing fixes, schema and the first page rewrites. Ongoing months add pages, mentions and reporting. Billing is month to month.
| Phase | When | Monthly price | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch months | Usually the first 2 | $2,500/mo | Audit, crawler and indexing fixes, schema, business details cleanup, first answer-first page rewrites, tracking setup |
| Ongoing | After launch, month to month | $1,500/mo | More page rewrites and new pages, mentions and citations, monthly prompt checks and AI referral reporting |
| One-time project | If you prefer project billing | $2,500 – $5,000 | A website build or rebuild with the AI search foundations in place at launch, quoted after discovery |
Prices from Verlua's published rates. Exact scope is confirmed after a free audit.
For the wider market, the best data is for SEO in general, not AI SEO. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers (updated August 2024): the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, chosen by 20.4% of respondents, and 68.8% charged $2,000 a month or less. Local SEO averaged $1,557 a month. We found no comparable survey of AI SEO pricing, so treat any "average AI SEO cost" figure with care.

What Is Included in AI SEO?
AI SEO includes the work that makes your pages readable, trustworthy and quotable for AI search tools: crawler access, indexing, answer-first pages, schema that matches the page, consistent business details, real mentions on other sites and monthly tracking. Most of it is one-time setup followed by steady monthly page and mention work.
| Task | What it does | One time or monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler access | robots.txt and firewall rules let Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot read your pages | Launch, then checked monthly |
| Indexing and snippets | Key pages are indexed and eligible for a snippet, which Google lists as the only technical requirement for AI Overviews | Launch, then monthly |
| Answer-first pages | Service and FAQ pages rewritten so each question heading is answered in the first two sentences below it | Monthly, a few pages at a time |
| Schema that matches the page | LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage markup that says the same thing as the visible text | Launch, then per new page |
| Business details everywhere | The same name, services, area and contact details on your site, Google Business Profile and directories | Launch, then monthly |
| Mentions and citations | Real mentions on local directories, trade associations and sites people already trust in your trade | Monthly |
| llms.txt | A short Markdown file pointing AI tools to your most useful pages. Optional | One time, about an hour |
| Tracking and reporting | AI referral sessions in GA4, a fixed prompt list checked each month, Search Console and leads | Monthly |
Crawler access is the cheapest item and the one most often broken. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and a firewall or CDN setting can block AI crawlers without anyone noticing. Our AI crawler guide covers which bots to allow, and our free AI visibility check tests your own site in about a minute.
Is AI SEO Priced Differently From Regular SEO?
Usually not, and it shouldn't be by much. Google's guidance on AI features says "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." A page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, the same as any search result. So a separate AI fee on top of SEO that covers the same tasks is paying twice.
A few tasks are new, and they're small. ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own search crawlers, so access for those bots has to be checked. AI answers can't be tracked with rank trackers, so someone has to check a fixed list of prompts each month. And AI referral traffic needs its own view in Analytics. That's hours of work a month, not a second retainer.
| Work | Regular SEO | AI SEO adds |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling | Googlebot and Bingbot | OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and other AI search crawlers |
| Content | Pages that match what people search | The same pages, with a direct answer under each question heading |
| Authority | Links, reviews and Google Business Profile | Brand mentions on sites AI tools cite, such as directories and forums |
| Files | robots.txt and sitemap | Optional llms.txt |
| Reporting | Rankings, Search Console, calls and forms | AI referral sessions and a monthly prompt check |
What Drives the Cost of AI SEO?
The cost depends on how much fixing your site needs, how many pages have to be rewritten, how crowded your market is and how messy your business listings are. A clean five-page site in a quiet trade needs little beyond the ongoing rate. A slow site with dozens of service pages and old listings needs longer launch months.
| Factor | Less work | More work |
|---|---|---|
| Site condition | Fast, indexed, clean code | Slow, blocked crawlers, pages missing from Google |
| Pages to rewrite | A handful of service pages | Dozens of services, cities or locations |
| Competition | Few local competitors publishing useful pages | Crowded trade with active agencies |
| Business details | Consistent across Google and directories | Old addresses, duplicate listings, name changes |
| Reporting depth | GA4 AI referrals and Search Console | Prompt tracking across several AI tools, call tracking |

What Red Flags Should You Watch for in AI SEO Quotes?
The biggest red flag is a guarantee: "rank #1 in ChatGPT" or a promised number of AI citations. AI answers vary by platform, by how the question is worded and by who asks, so nobody controls them. A fair quote lists the work and how it will be measured, not an outcome.
- A separate AI package that repeats the SEO work. If the AI line items are schema, content and links, you're already paying for those in SEO.
- llms.txt sold as a big deliverable. The llms.txt format is a proposal, and Google says you don't need AI text files to appear in its AI features. It's an hour of work. Our llms.txt guide shows how to write one.
- No mention of Google indexing. AI Overviews only use pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet. A plan that skips Search Console is skipping the base.
- Bought mentions on unrelated sites. Mentions help when they come from sources people already trust in your trade or town, not from paid link networks.
- Reports that are only screenshots. A screenshot of one AI answer proves very little. Ask for the full prompt list, the dates checked and the referral traffic behind it.
How Do You Measure AI SEO Results?
Measure AI SEO with four numbers: AI referral sessions in Google Analytics 4, your Search Console clicks and impressions, a monthly check of the same prompt list in each AI tool, and leads that say they found you through AI. No single tool shows all of it, so a monthly report should bring the four together.
- AI referral traffic in GA4. Filter sessions by source for the AI tools below, or build a custom channel group with this regex. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto referral links, which makes ChatGPT visits easy to spot. - Search Console. Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode traffic inside the Web search type of the Performance report. It can't be split out, so watch total clicks on the pages you rewrote.
- A fixed prompt list. Write 20 to 30 questions your customers ask, such as "best gutter guard installer in Roseville," and check them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google each month. Record whether you're named and which sources are cited.
- Leads. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" to your "How did you hear about us?" options, on forms and on the phone.
chatgpt\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.aiGA4 regex for an "AI referrals" channel, matched on session source. Visits from AI apps that don't pass a referrer show up as direct traffic.
How Long Does AI SEO Take to Show Results?
Technical fixes can show up within days; content and authority take months. OpenAI says ChatGPT search adjusts to a robots.txt change in about 24 hours. Google says recrawling can take anywhere from several days to several months. New pages and mentions build over the following months, and nobody can promise a date.
Here's what steady monthly SEO looks like on a site we built. Sacramento Gutter Guard went from 60 to 776 Google clicks over the same 12 weeks a year apart (Jul 27–Oct 18, 2025 vs Jul 26–Oct 17, 2026). That's organic Google search, including any AI Overview clicks Google counts there, not ChatGPT traffic. It's the base AI answers draw from.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI SEO Cost
How much does AI SEO cost?
At Verlua, AI SEO is part of the monthly SEO engagement, not a separate fee: $2,500/mo during launch months, then $1,500/mo for ongoing work. No minimum contract. Across the market, Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO providers found the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, and 68.8% charged $2,000 a month or less.
Is AI SEO included in regular SEO?
Mostly, yes. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so the core work is the same as good SEO. The parts that are extra are small: letting AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in, tracking a fixed set of prompts each month, and reporting AI referral traffic.
Can an agency guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. AI answers change with the platform, the wording of the question and the person asking, so nobody controls them. Treat a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking or a promised number of AI citations as a red flag. A fair quote names the work that will be done and how results will be measured.
Do I need to pay for an llms.txt file?
Not as a separate line item. llms.txt is a proposed standard, and Google says you don't need AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. Writing one takes an hour or two, so it belongs inside the engagement. Paying hundreds of dollars for it alone is a sign the quote is padded.
How do I track traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity?
In Google Analytics 4, look at sessions by source for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai, or build a custom channel group for them. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Google AI Overview clicks can't be split out; Search Console counts them inside the Web search type.
