TL;DR
Wix plans: Light $17, Core $29, Business $39, Business Elite $159 a month, billed yearly. Hosting is included; the free domain lasts one year. Wix is a good, fair-priced way to get online. Its limits show when the site has to bring in leads, and a Wix site can't be moved to another host, so leaving means a rebuild.
This post is about cost. If you are still choosing a platform, our Squarespace vs Wix vs WordPress comparison covers design, SEO, speed and ecommerce side by side. If you already know you're leaving Wix, skip to what changes when you migrate from Wix.

Which Wix plan does a service business need?
A contractor or local service business that only needs pages and a quote form can run on Light. If you want customers to book appointments or pay online, Core is the first plan Wix lists with accept payments and scheduling. Business adds more storage and collaborators, and Business Elite is built for larger stores and developer work.
What Does a Wix Domain and Hosting Cost?
Hosting is included in every Wix plan, so there is no separate hosting bill. Most paid plans include a free domain for one year. Wix's pricing FAQ says that voucher is only valid for a new domain bought from Wix and can't be used to renew or extend a domain you already own. From year two, you pay the renewal.
Wix's domains page listed .com registration at $7.90 a year when we checked on October 31, 2026. Confirm the renewal price at checkout before you count on it, since a registration price and a renewal price aren't always the same. If you already own your domain somewhere else, you can connect it to Wix instead.
What Are the Hidden Costs of a Wix Website?
The plan is only part of the bill. On top of it come paid apps, business email, the domain after year one, a different rate if you pay monthly instead of yearly, and the biggest one: your own time to build, write and maintain the site. Templates themselves are free on Wix.
| Cost | What it is | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Apps | Some Wix App Market apps need a premium upgrade, priced by the app’s developer, billed as its own recurring subscription and not included in your Wix plan. | Check each app’s pricing in the App Market before you install it. |
| Domain after year one | The free domain voucher covers the first year only. | Check the renewal price in your Wix domains dashboard. |
| Business email | An address at your own domain is a Google Workspace subscription that Wix sells separately from the site plan. | Check the Business Email page in your Wix account for the current price. |
| Billing period | The headline prices assume a yearly plan paid up front. | Compare the monthly option on the checkout page. |
| Tax | Prices on the plans page exclude tax. | The final price shows on the purchase page. |
| Your time | Choosing a template, writing every page, sourcing photos, and keeping it current. | Count your hours and price them at what an hour on the job earns you. |
Your time is the line most owners leave out. Building it yourself only saves money if those hours would not otherwise go to paid work. Run the math with your own numbers: hours to build and write the site, times what an hour on the job earns you, plus a few hours a month to keep it current. If that number is bigger than a build, it's cheaper to hire a web designer and spend the hours on jobs.
What Does Wix Do Well?
Wix is a fast, low-risk way to get a decent-looking site online. Hosting, security monitoring and 24/7 customer care are part of every plan, you can start free, and the editor needs no code. For a new business, a one-page portfolio or a site that only needs to look credible, it is a fair deal.
- Fast start: an AI builder and 2,000+ free templates, per Wix's plans page.
- Nothing to maintain on the server side: hosting, security and uptime are Wix's job, not yours.
- Real SEO tools: editable titles and descriptions, a 301 redirect manager, a robots.txt editor and controls for AI crawlers.
- Built-in business tools: scheduling, payments and a store on the Core plan and up.
Where Does Wix Limit a Service Business?
Wix's limits show up when the website has to bring in leads, not just exist. You work inside what the platform exposes: you can edit page settings, but not how the platform loads its pages or the code underneath. And because a Wix site has to stay on Wix's servers, outgrowing it means a rebuild, not a move.
| Area | On Wix | On a custom site |
|---|---|---|
| SEO control | Page titles, descriptions, redirects, robots.txt and structured data within Wix’s settings | Full control of every page template, internal link and piece of schema |
| Speed | Depends on the platform’s code plus the apps and elements you add | The code is yours, so you can strip anything that slows the page |
| AI search | You can allow or block AI crawlers; page structure follows Wix’s templates | Answer-first page structure, FAQ schema and llms.txt built in from the start |
| Many service and town pages | Possible with Wix’s CMS and dynamic pages, within the layouts its editor allows | Generated from one template you control, so 30 pages stay consistent |
| Call and form tracking | Possible through apps and integrations | Built into every form and phone link |
| Leaving later | The site must stay on Wix’s servers; leaving means rebuilding it | You own the code and can move hosts |
The portability point deserves a plain quote. Wix's Help Center says that for a site to work properly, it needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers. Your domain can move; the site can't. That is a fair tradeoff for a lot of businesses. Just know it before you put three years of pages into it.
When Does a Custom Website Pay Off Over Wix?
A custom site pays off when the website's job is to bring in work: you sell several services, serve several towns, and a single extra job a month is worth more than the difference in cost. If your site only needs to confirm you exist, stay on Wix. If you want it to compete in Google and AI search, custom usually wins.
| Line item | Wix Core, built yourself | Verlua custom site |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront | $348 for the first year, paid up front | $2,500 – $5,000 one-time, or $2,500/mo for launch months |
| Who builds it | You | Us, with your input on services, towns and photos |
| Ongoing growth | Your time | Optional SEO at $1,500/mo, no minimum contract |
| Ownership | Your domain; the site lives on Wix | Your domain, code and accounts |
Exact pricing depends on scope, competition, and timeline. These figures reflect what we typically quote for local service businesses; every engagement is confirmed after a free audit or discovery call.
What custom buys you is the setup that brings in leads: a page for each service and town, tracked calls and forms, and pages built to be found on Google and quoted in AI answers. Sacramento Gutter Guard, a custom site we built and run, went from 60 to 776 Google clicks over the same 12 weeks a year apart. The Sacramento Gutter Guard case study shows the build. That is one site, not a forecast.
If that is the kind of site you need, see our custom website design services, or compare tiers on our website design packages page. Our guide to what's included in a website design package lists what to expect in any quote, and the website cost guide covers every price band.
Frequently Asked Questions About Wix Website Cost
How much does a Wix website cost per month?
On Wix's US pricing page (checked October 31, 2026), paid plans were $17/mo (Light), $29/mo (Core), $39/mo (Business) and $159/mo (Business Elite), billed yearly and paid up front, before tax. A free plan exists, but it shows Wix branding and can't use your own domain.
How much does a Wix website cost per year?
Multiply the monthly rate by 12, because Wix bills the displayed prices yearly up front: $204 for Light, $348 for Core, $468 for Business and $1,908 for Business Elite, before tax. Add paid apps, business email and your domain renewal after year one.
Does Wix include a domain and hosting?
Hosting is included in every Wix plan. Most paid plans include a free domain for one year; Wix says the voucher only covers a new domain bought from Wix, not renewing one you already own. After year one, the domain renews at Wix’s rate.
Can I move my Wix website to another host?
No. Wix’s Help Center says a Wix site needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers to work. You can transfer your domain away from Wix, but the site itself has to be rebuilt on the new platform, with 301 redirects from the old URLs.
Is Wix good for SEO?
Wix covers the basics well: editable titles and descriptions, a 301 redirect manager, a robots.txt editor and controls for AI crawlers. The limits are what the platform doesn’t expose, like how pages load and how far you can change the underlying code. Plenty of simple sites rank fine on Wix.
When is a custom website worth it instead of Wix?
When the site’s job is to bring in leads: many service and town pages, tracked calls and forms, and full control over speed and code. At Verlua a custom build runs $2,500 – $5,000 one-time. If one extra job a month would cover that over a year, a custom site usually pays off.
Outgrowing your Wix site?
We build custom websites set up to be found on Google and in AI answers, with tracked calls and forms, for businesses in the Sacramento region. Builds run $2,500 – $5,000 one-time, or $2,500/mo for launch months. No minimum contract.
