AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?

SEO earns rankings and clicks in search results. AEO earns the direct answer in AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice results. GEO earns citations when tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity write an answer. All three share most of the work: a crawlable site, clear answers, accurate business details and a good reputation.

TL;DR

Treat AEO and GEO as layers on top of SEO, not replacements. Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond SEO best practices. The real differences are small: ChatGPT and Perplexity use their own crawlers, AI answers quote passages rather than rank pages, and you measure citations and AI referrals alongside clicks. Fix SEO foundations first, then rewrite your best pages answer-first.

What Is the Difference Between AEO, GEO and SEO?

The difference is where the result shows up and what counts as a win. SEO wins a ranking and a click. AEO wins the single direct answer. GEO wins a citation or a mention inside an AI-written answer. The table compares the three on goal, results, work, measurement and timeline.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the work of getting your pages crawled, indexed and ranked in Google and Bing, including the map pack for local searches. It is the oldest of the three and the base of the other two. See our SEO glossary entry for the short version.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your page the one an answer tool quotes. The label predates ChatGPT, when it meant featured snippets and voice assistants; today it mostly means AI Overviews and AI chat answers. Our guide to answer engine optimization covers how answer engines pick sources.

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization is the work of getting cited when generative AI tools write an answer. The term comes from a 2023 research paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) that tested which page edits made sources show up more in AI answers. Read what generative engine optimization is or the GEO glossary entry.

Where Do AEO, GEO and SEO Overlap?

They overlap on most of the work. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be shown as a supporting link (Google, AI features and your website). So the SEO basics are also the AEO and GEO basics.

Answer-first pages are the clearest shared task. A heading phrased as the customer's question, with a 40 to 60 word answer right under it, helps a searcher, gives Google a passage for an AI Overview, and gives ChatGPT a clean quote. The GEO paper found the same direction: adding sources, quotations and statistics helped pages show up in AI answers, while keyword stuffing did little or nothing.

Where Do AEO and GEO Differ From SEO?

They differ in three places: which crawlers need access, whether the page or the passage is the unit that wins, and how you measure results. Everything else is shared. These three are worth knowing because each one is easy to miss if your SEO setup predates AI search.

  • More crawlers. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI). Perplexity uses PerplexityBot (Perplexity). A firewall rule that blocks "AI bots" can quietly remove you from both.
  • Passages, not pages. SEO ranks a whole page. Answer engines lift a paragraph, a table row or a list. A page can rank well and still not be quoted if its answer is buried.
  • Different reports. Search Console counts AI Overview traffic inside its Web totals. For citations, Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 that counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries (Bing Webmaster Blog). ChatGPT and Perplexity visits show up as referrals in Google Analytics.

What Should a Business Do First: SEO, AEO or GEO?

Do SEO first, because Google's AI answers are built from its search index and a page that isn't indexed can't be cited. Then rewrite the pages that already get impressions so they answer questions directly. Then add the GEO layer: AI crawler access, mentions on trusted sites and AI referral tracking.

  1. Check your site. Run the free AI visibility check to see whether crawlers are blocked, text is missing from the HTML, or schema is absent.
  2. Fix indexing and your Business Profile. Make sure every service page is indexed and your Google Business Profile has the right category, services and area.
  3. Rewrite your best pages answer-first. Start with service and cost pages that already get impressions in Search Console.
  4. Mark up the business. Organization or LocalBusiness schema that matches your listings word for word.
  5. Earn mentions. Local directories, trade associations, suppliers and community sites that name you.
  6. Track it. Search Console, Bing AI Performance, AI referrals in GA4, and a monthly prompt list.

Our clearest example of why the SEO base comes first is Sacramento Gutter Guard, a gutter company site we built and run. It went from 60 organic Google clicks (Jul 27–Oct 18, 2025) to 776 over the same 12 weeks a year later (Jul 26–Oct 17, 2026). Those are search clicks, not AI citations, from one site in one market; the Sacramento Gutter Guard case study shows what we built.

Do You Need Separate AEO, GEO and SEO Services?

No. Because the work overlaps so heavily, one team should do all three on one plan. Be careful with quotes that bill SEO, AEO and GEO as separate monthly fees, or that promise you will be cited by ChatGPT. AI answers change with the question and the person asking, so no one controls them.

Our AI SEO services cover SEO, answer-first pages and AI search tracking in one monthly engagement, and what AI SEO costs explains the pricing. Frequently Asked Questions About AEO, GEO and SEO

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to make your page the direct answer, in AI Overviews, featured snippets or voice results. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims to get your site cited when generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity write an answer. The labels overlap so much that the work on your site is nearly identical.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be cited. ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own crawlers, but they still need a readable, useful page. GEO adds to SEO; it does not replace it.

Which matters most for a local service business?

SEO first, including your Google Business Profile, because AI answers about local services draw on the same search index and listings. Once your main service pages are indexed and getting impressions, rewrite them answer-first and open access to AI crawlers. That order gets the most out of each month.

Can you do AEO or GEO without SEO?

Not in any useful way. If a page is not crawled and indexed, Google’s AI features can’t cite it, and if ChatGPT’s or Perplexity’s crawlers are blocked, those tools won’t show it in search answers. The foundations are the same; AEO and GEO change how you write and what you measure.

How do you measure AEO and GEO?

Use Search Console for Google clicks (AI Overview traffic is counted in the Web totals), Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report for citations in Copilot and Bing, Google Analytics 4 for referral visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, and a fixed list of customer questions checked in each AI tool every month.

How much do SEO, AEO and GEO cost?

At Verlua they are one monthly engagement, not three fees: $2,500/mo during launch months, then $1,500/mo for ongoing work. No minimum contract. Exact scope is confirmed after a free audit.
